The Tinubu administration is facing significant challenges. One year into his four-year tenure, notable achievements have been elusive. A year ago, the dollar traded at around ₦500/$, and petrol pump prices hovered around ₦300/liter. Now, the dollar has soared to over ₦1400/$, and petrol prices start at ₦700/liter. Widespread insecurity persists, factories struggle to stay operational, and the country grapples with persistent power outages.
Undoubtedly, Tinubu inherited a daunting situation from Buhari. The level of spiteful incompetence witnessed during Buhari’s tenure is unlikely to be forgotten in the short term. However, Tinubu has made his own missteps. Floating the currency of a nation with minimal production capacity inevitably leads to the economic hardships currently plaguing Nigeria. Additionally, appointing individuals to government based on loyalty rather than competency exacerbates the problem. Ministers play crucial roles in shaping policy and governance.
Here are 10 Tinubu-appointed ministers whom you’ve likely scarcely heard about:
1 Joseph Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation
This minister is from Benue state, and that seem to be the only information about him. His ministry has no functional website and there are barely any news articles where the minister or his ministry are mentioned regarding any policy programs. Even the Wikipedia page of the ministry still contains information about the previous minister of water resources.
2. MINISTER OF YOUTH– HON. JAMILA BIO IBRAHIM
Part of her mandate is “to empower Nigerian youths to becoming self-reliant and socially responsible.” But her performance is a little bit hard to assess because her ministry does not have a functional website and there are barely any news articles mentioning her programs.
3. MINISTER OF TOURISM – HON. LOLA ADE-JOHN
Tourism is supposed to be one of the major drivers of the Nigerian economy. But 10 months since this minister resumed office, her ministry does not have a functional website or any notable presence on social media. We simply dont know what she is up to.
4. MINISTER OF POLICE AFFAIRS -HON. IBRAHIM GEIDAM
With the current level of widespread insecurity across Nigeria, one would assume that the minister of police affairs would be a household name assuring Nigerians of government’s protection. Unless you are from Yobe, where Geidam is a former governor, you’ve probably never seen or heard of this guy.
5. MINISTER OF INNOVATION, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY – HON. UCHE NNAJI
The ministry’s website is a WordPress site that displays “There has been a critical error on this website” error message on the homepage. That is about the only thing there is to know about our “minster of innovation, science and technology.”
6. MINISTER OF NIGER DELTA AFFAIRS – HON. ABUBAKAR MOMOH
The Ministry of Niger Delta Development was created to promote and coordinate policies for the development of peace and security of the Niger Delta region. The region is Nigeria’s oil producing region but has experienced underdevelopment due to exploitation of oil and lack of investments in the region over the years.
7. MINISTER OF STEEL DEVELOPMENT – HON. SHUAIBU A. AUDU
Like most government agencies in Nigeria, this ministry has no functional website making it hard to know the programs of the ministry.
8. MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY – HON. ABUBAKAR KYARI
This minister needs to do more telling Nigerians about his programs and policies. The ministry has no functional website making it hard to figure out his programs.
9. MINISTER OF TRANSPORTATION – HON. SA’IDU ALKALI
Just like most Nigerians, you would be forgiven for thinking a minister of transportation does not exist since Amaechi left office.
10. MINISTER OF HOUSING & URBAN DEVELOPMENT – HON. AHMED M. DANGIWA
Tinubu’s ministers have fallen short of expectations, even within the APC’s standards. Rumors of an impending cabinet reshuffle abound, raising hopes for improved governance. Let’s anticipate that Tinubu selects more capable individuals to join his government, steering Nigeria toward a brighter future.
