Peter Obi Responds to Criticism Over Food Sharing at Charity Event, Says Humility Is His Lifestyle

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has addressed widespread reactions following his participation in a charity programme in Imo State, where he was seen serving food to underprivileged individuals.
The event, tagged “Jubilee of Hope,” took place last week and quickly gained traction online after photos and videos surfaced showing Obi personally dishing out meals to attendees. While the gesture earned praise from many Nigerians who viewed it as a symbol of humility and service, it also attracted criticism, with some accusing the former Anambra State governor of using the occasion for political optics.
In a statement released via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, Obi dismissed the claims of political motivation. He emphasized that his actions were rooted in a longstanding personal philosophy of humility and compassion for the less fortunate.
“Service to humanity is not something I do for the cameras or for political gain. It is who I am and what I believe in. Humility is not a show—it is my lifestyle,” Obi stated.
He further noted that his involvement in charitable activities long predates his political aspirations and is consistent with his belief in leadership through service.
The Jubilee of Hope initiative, organized by a coalition of local non-profit organizations, aimed to provide food, clothing, and basic healthcare support to vulnerable communities across Imo State. Obi was invited as a special guest, and his active participation became one of the standout moments of the event.
Supporters and civil society advocates have since defended Obi’s actions, calling for a more compassionate political culture in Nigeria, where public figures are encouraged to engage directly with citizens in need.
Meanwhile, Obi reiterated his commitment to addressing poverty and inequality, urging fellow leaders to “look beyond politics and serve with empathy.”
