Presidential CNG Initiative Begins Distribution and Installation of CNG Kits in Ogun State
Ogun State Leads in Vehicle Conversion to CNG, Easing Fuel Costs for Commercial Drivers
On Saturday, the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi) launched a key phase of its plan to reduce fuel costs by distributing and installing compressed natural gas (CNG) kits to commercial motorists in Ogun State. This initiative aims to convert petrol-powered vehicles to run on the more affordable and environmentally-friendly CNG.
At the launch event in Abeokuta, Olugboyegba Ademehin, the Director of Vehicle Inspection Services at the Ogun State Ministry of Transportation, announced that 500 CNG cylinders and kits would be distributed across three centers in the state. He emphasized that vehicle inspections would be carried out before distribution to ensure that only vehicles deemed fit for conversion would receive the kits.
According to Mr. Ademehin, 60 CNG kits were allocated to the Ogun Public Works Agency at Agbeloba Centre, comprising 10 units of 75-litre cylinders and 50 units of 65-litre cylinders. The 75-litre cylinders, he noted, could power a vehicle for up to 150 kilometers, making it a highly cost-effective option for commercial drivers. He added that the distribution centers would gradually extend their services to the general public over the coming months.
Speaking on the safety and durability of the CNG cylinders, Mr. Ademehin explained that the cylinders were molded, rather than welded, which enhances their strength and fireproof properties. With a thickness of 60 millimeters, the cylinders have been certified by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) for safe use.
The director also highlighted that two CNG filling stations were currently operational in Abeokuta, facilitating access to the gas for converted vehicles.
“We, in Ogun state, through the initiative of the governor, have begun conversion before now because we prioritize a cleaner environment. That is why we have our CNG buses plying the city,” Mr. Ademehin said. He further pointed out that the use of CNG would help reduce transportation costs for both motorists and the public, especially in the wake of soaring petrol prices.
Ali, the Operations Manager of Nigerian Gas and Transport Solutions Ltd., also spoke at the event, noting that the gas industry in Nigeria remains underutilized. He expressed optimism that the P-CNGi initiative would not only help reduce fuel costs but also encourage the country to harness its vast natural gas resources.
In addition, Ismail Adewale, Chairman of the National Union of Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ogun State, commended the federal government for its foresight in introducing the CNG initiative. He acknowledged the financial relief it would bring to commercial drivers who are currently grappling with high fuel prices.
The P-CNGi is a federal government initiative designed to promote the use of natural gas as a cleaner, cheaper alternative to petrol. With the successful rollout in Ogun State, the program is expected to be expanded to other parts of Nigeria, offering a sustainable solution to the country’s transportation challenges.
