Drunk Zambian Policeman Frees 13 Prisoners So They Could Celebrate New Year

A shocking incident unfolded in Zambia as a police officer was arrested for allegedly releasing over a dozen prisoners to celebrate New Year’s Eve. The Zambia Police Service confirmed the arrest of Detective Inspector Titus Phiri, who reportedly acted under the influence of alcohol.

According to a press release issued on Wednesday, Phiri “forcibly seized cell keys” on Tuesday morning while “in a state of intoxication.” The statement detailed how the officer unlocked both male and female cells and instructed the detainees to leave, claiming they were free to cross into the New Year.

This unorthodox act of celebration resulted in the escape of 13 detainees, some of whom were being held on charges of assault, theft, and other offenses. A manhunt has been launched to locate and apprehend the escapees, who remain at large as of the time of the report.

The Zambia Police Service has assured the public that it remains committed to maintaining law and order. “Decisive action will be taken against any officer found to be abusing their authority or acting contrary to the law,” the statement emphasized.

This incident has raised questions about the conduct and accountability of law enforcement officers in Zambia. While the police service works to restore public confidence, the escape of potentially dangerous suspects poses a significant challenge to community safety.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on apprehending the escaped detainees and ensuring that officers adhere to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
