There is a total of 197 universities accredited and approved by the NUC to operate in Nigeria. The existence and operation of every university in Nigeria are based on the approval and license of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Nigeria currently has 45 Federal Universities, 53 State Universities, and 99 private universities that have been accredited for operation by the NUC.
The NUC is the government agency tasked with the regulation of university education in Nigeria. It gives out licences for operation and accredits universities and all the courses offered in them.
Without NUC approval and accreditation, students who graduate from such universities will not be eligible to participate in the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC); meaning the certificates obtained from universities without NUC approval will be null and void.
This is why the NUC has always warned the prospective students from time to time to first verify if a university is approved before patronizing them.
