The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially debunked the rumor circulating on social media that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has been cancelled.
According to a statement by Moyosola Adesina, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, the Council has not cancelled the 2025 exams and has no affiliation with the press release falsely claiming so. The fake documentโwhich alleged the exams were cancelled due to widespread malpractice and leakage of exam materialsโhas been circulating since July 19 and caused panic among students and parents.
โThe Council has not cancelled the examination. The source of the fake press statement is unknown, but we believe it is the work of mischief-makers attempting to damage the reputation of WAEC,โ Adesina stated.
The 2025 WASSCE was conducted a few months ago, and while there were challenges during the English Language Paper 2โespecially with the controversial late-night exam on Wednesday, May 28โWAEC confirmed that the exams were completed and are currently in the final stages of result processing.
WAEC acknowledged the scheduling delay and apologized at the time, explaining that the changes were part of extra efforts to prevent question leaks and ensure exam integrity.
Exam Marking Complete, Results Coming in August
Despite the false reports, WAEC confirmed that it has completed marking all scripts and that the 2025 WASSCE results will be released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025.
The Councilโs examinersโveterans in the education fieldโfollowed strict marking guidelines. WAEC also highlighted that each examiner was trained using a standardized co-ordination process, which ensures consistency and fairness in scoring.
A Reminder on Exam Malpractice
WAEC used the opportunity to remind candidates and stakeholders about offenses that count as examination malpractice:
Bringing notes or books into the exam hall
Impersonation
Swapping or replacing scripts
Assaulting exam officials
Participating in organized cheating
WAEC has a history of withholding results in cases of confirmed malpractice. In 2023, over 262,000 results were held pending investigation.
What is WAEC?
WAEC is an international examination body serving five English-speaking West African countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Established in 1952, WAEC is responsible for conducting senior secondary school exams and awarding certificates recognized internationally.
The Councilโs vision is to remain a world-class examining body that supports the educational goals of its member countries.
