The Zero-Cost Guide to Getting Your TIN in Nigeria (No Agents Needed)

If you want to open a corporate bank account, apply for a government loan or stay compliant with Nigerian tax rules, you need a Tax Identification Number (TIN). Many agents charge between ₦5,000 and ₦15,000 to “help” you get one. Do not pay. A TIN is completely free, and you can get it yourself from your phone or laptop.
This guide shows how to check if you already have a TIN and how to apply for one online or offline.
Step 1: Check if You Already Have a TIN
Before you start a new application, confirm whether the system has already generated one for you. The Joint Tax Board (JTB) auto-assigns TINs to Nigerians who have a BVN or NIN.
How to verify:
- Search “JTB TIN Verification” on Google or go to the official JTB portal.
- Select “TIN Verification” or “Check TIN.”
- Enter your date of birth.
- Choose a search option: BVN, NIN, or Phone Number.
- Enter the number and click Search.
What happens next:
• If you already have a TIN, the system will show it with your full name.
• Screenshot the page and email it to yourself for safekeeping.
• If the result says “No Record Found,” then you need to apply.
Step 2: Apply for Your TIN Online (For Individuals)
If you are a freelancer, employee, sole proprietor or self-employed, you can register online.
How to apply online:
- Visit the JTB “TIN Request” page.
- Enter your personal details exactly as they appear on your BVN/NIN.
- Provide a valid email address and phone number.
- Submit the form.
If the system is working normally, you will receive your TIN by email. Sometimes the site is slow, so retry if needed.
Step 3: If the Online Portal Fails, Apply at a FIRS Office
Government websites sometimes go offline. If the JTB portal keeps failing, use the offline method.
Take these documents to any FIRS office:
• A valid ID (NIN slip, voter’s card, international passport or driver’s license).
• A recent utility bill from the last 3 months.
• One passport photograph.
Once inside, go straight to the customer service desk and request the “TIN Application Form for Individuals.”
Fill the form, attach your documents and submit it.
This service is 100 percent free.
If a security guard or unofficial agent asks for payment, ignore them and speak only to the officials at the desk.
Step 4: Getting a TIN for a Registered Business (CAC)
If you already registered a business name or company with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), the process is slightly different.
First check your CAC certificate:
Since 2020, many CAC certificates now include the business TIN. Look near the top or bottom of the document.
If the TIN is not printed:
You will need to:
• Apply through the JTB portal under “Non-Individual.”
• Or visit a FIRS office with your CAC documents.
Step 5: Print Your TIN Certificate
Once you have your TIN, return to the JTB portal and choose “Print TIN Certificate.”
Banks often require the physical certificate when you want to open a corporate account, so download and print a copy.
Summary
• Check if you already have a TIN using the JTB verification portal.
• If you do not have one, apply online through the JTB website.
• If the online portal fails, visit any FIRS office with your ID and utility bill.
• Do not pay anyone. A TIN is free.
• Business owners with CAC certificates should also check if their TIN is already printed on the document.
